چکیده

A team of experts in biology, chemistry, and toxicology has developed a protocol to help industrial scientists detect endocrinedisrupting tendencies early in the chemical development process. What sets the Tiered Protocol for Endocrine Disruption (TiPED) apart from the protocols typically used to assess product safety is its incorporation of what the authors believe to be the best assays for detecting effects on the endocrine system. TiPED offers industry what coauthor John Warner, president of the Warner Babcock Institute for Green Chemistry, calls an “à la carte palette of assays . . . that have been vetted by the environmental health community.” The protocol was inspired by demand from consumers for safer materials, as well as from chemists and companies wishing to meet that demand, according to the authors. It starts with the fastest, simplest, cheapest tests and progresses to increasingly complex, expensive assays to identify endocrine activity—an issue the authors say is not currently addressed by U.S. chemical regulations. Designing Endocrine Disruption Out of the Next Generation of Chemicals.

A central goal of green chemistry is to avoid hazard in the design of new chemicals. This objective is best achieved when information about a chemical's potential hazardous effects is obtained as early in the design process as feasible. Endocrine disruption is a type of hazard that to date has been inadequately addressed by both industrial and regulatory science. To aid chemists in avoiding thi...

Courage for simplification and imperfection in the 21st century assessment of "Endocrine disruption".

"Endocrine disruption" is a public and political buzzword that has and is still receiving high media attention. Based on the latter, numerous tiered testing strategies have evolved that should ensure that humans will not run a health risk due to the voluntary or involuntary exposure to endocrine active compounds (EAS). An analysis of the currently available knowledge on EAS mediated endocrine d...

Designing Safer Chemicals

Many of the > 83,000 chemicals currently used in commerce pose potential toxic hazards to human health and the environment. Numerous policies and systems are in place to try to identify harmful chemicals that are already in use, but removing these problem chemicals once they are already in the marketplace can be difficult, time-consuming, and costly. In an ideal world, chemists would be able to...

Identification and assessment of endocrine disruptors: limitations of in vivo and in vitro assays.

It has been suggested that chemicals and complex mixtures capable of modulating the endocrine system may contribute to adverse health, reproduction, and developmental effects in humans and wildlife. These effects include increased incidence of hormone-dependent cancers, compromised reproductive fitness, and abnormal reproductive system development. In response to public concern, regulatory agen...
